Psalm 1:1–3
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” — Psalm 1:3, ESV
Devotional
Psalm 1 opens with a picture of two ways to live, but its deepest invitation is not merely to avoid the wrong path. It is to become the kind of person whose life is rooted in the life of God. The blessed person is not driven by the counsel of the world or carried along by whatever feels immediate, clever, or desirable in the moment. He is marked by delight in the law of the Lord. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, quietly nourished, steadily sustained, and able to bear fruit in season.
That image speaks to the kind of life many of us long for. We want stability, fruitfulness, and endurance. We want to remain standing when life feels dry or uncertain. Yet Psalm 1 reminds us that a withstanding life is always a rooted life. Strength does not come from pretending to be strong. Fruit does not come from pressure. The tree thrives because it is planted near its source. In the same way, the soul is sustained not by striving, but by remaining near the Lord who gives life through His Word.
This psalm finds its fullest meaning in Christ. Jesus is the truly blessed Man who never walked in sin, never delighted in evil, and never turned aside from the will of His Father. He is the One whose life was perfectly rooted in the truth and whose obedience never withered. And through His death and resurrection, He has made a way for sinners to be joined to Him. In Christ, we are not left trying to become spiritually alive on our own. We are planted in Him, and by His Spirit we are nourished through the Word that reveals Him.
That means the call of Psalm 1 is not simply to read more or try harder. It is to remain where life is found. As we come to Scripture, we are not merely gathering insight. We are being brought near to Christ, the living Word, who steadies the heart and forms lasting fruit in His people. A healthy tree does not strain to look alive. It receives what it needs from its source. So it is with the believer. The one who stays near Christ through His Word will be sustained by grace and made fruitful in time.
