Let All Things Build Up

“Let all things be done for building up.”—1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV

Devotional

Paul reminds the Corinthians that spiritual gifts are never given merely for personal expression. They are given by the Spirit for the strengthening of Christ’s body. A gift is rightly used when it helps others see Jesus more clearly, understand His truth more faithfully, and grow in love for Him.

This gives us a helpful measure for the way we speak and serve: does this build up? Our words can draw attention to ourselves, create confusion, or leave others carrying unnecessary weight. They can also encourage the weary, clarify truth, restore hope, and strengthen someone’s faith. Christ used His words to reveal the Father, call people to repentance, comfort the broken, and give life.

The Spirit forms that same intentionality in us. Whether we are teaching, encouraging, leading, serving, or simply speaking with someone across a table, we can ask how our presence might leave them stronger in Christ. Building up the church rarely requires being something you are not. It requires love that is attentive enough to seek another person’s good.

Do your words and the way you use your gifts leave others more strengthened in Christ?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You speak words of truth and life. Teach me to use what You have given me for the good of Your people. Guard me from seeking attention, recognition, or importance through my gifts. By Your Spirit, make my words clear, loving, and useful, and show me how to strengthen the faith of those You place around me today. Amen.
