Scripture Focus: John 15:5 (ESV)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
We tend to think dependence is something that happens after we fail—something we fall back into once our strength runs out. But Scripture teaches that dependence is not a fallback; it is our original design.
Jesus does not tell the disciples to be strong for Him.
He tells them to abide in Him.
Branches do not apologize for needing the vine.
They do not resist it.
They do not pretend independence is virtuous.
They simply remain connected and receive what they cannot produce.
To say “apart from Me you can do nothing” is not Jesus reducing your value. It’s Jesus revealing your source. Fruitfulness—character, transformation, endurance, holiness—does not come from self-effort. It comes from union.
Lent reminds us that life with God is not achieved; it is received.
You are not meant to sustain yourself.
You are not meant to generate strength alone.
You are not meant to carry the weight of your spiritual growth.
Dependence is not a burden—it is a relief.
It frees you from pretending to be what you’re not: self-sufficient.
God created you to draw life from Him. To rest in Him. To trust Him. To turn toward Him in the small, quiet ways that shape a whole life.
Your limitations are not obstacles to spiritual maturity—they are openings through which grace flows.
The Christian life is not lived by trying harder.
It is lived by staying near.
Practice
Take a slow breath and whisper the words Jesus speaks:
“Apart from You, I can do nothing.”
Then ask Him:
“Teach me to abide in You today.”
Choose one moment—when you cook, work, drive, or rest—where you will intentionally pause and reconnect with Him throughout the day.
Reflection Question
Where am I acting as if I am the vine instead of the branch?
