Scripture Focus — John 15:9–11 (ESV)
“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” — John 15:11 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Jesus speaks about joy while describing a life of abiding. He does not separate joy from obedience or joy from relationship. Instead, He weaves them together. Joy, in Jesus’ teaching, is not an emotional reward that comes after obedience—it is the fruit that grows within a life that remains connected to Him. To abide is to stay, to remain, to dwell in the steady love of Christ. And it is here, in that ongoing relationship, that joy is formed and made complete.
This challenges many of our assumptions about joy. We often look for joy in circumstances changing, prayers being answered quickly, or life becoming easier. Jesus invites us into something deeper. He promises joy that is full—steady, sustaining, and enduring—because it flows from intimacy with Him rather than from external conditions. Obedience, then, is not a burden but a pathway that keeps us close to the source of life and joy.
Advent reminds us that the joy we long for is not found in doing more, striving harder, or managing outcomes. It is found in staying near to Christ. As we learn to abide—through trust, surrender, and faithful obedience—joy grows naturally within us. This is joy that strengthens endurance, shapes character, and carries us through every season of the journey.
