Scripture Focus — 1 John 4:9–10 (ESV)
“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
Devotional Reflection
On the eve of Christmas, Scripture slows us down and clarifies what love truly is. John tells us that God’s love was made manifest—made visible, tangible, and unmistakable. Love was not left as a concept to be debated or a feeling to be measured. It took shape in the sending of the Son. God’s love became something the world could see, receive, and respond to.
This passage reorients our understanding of love at its core. Love does not begin with our affection for God, our faithfulness, or our devotion. It begins with His initiative. “Not that we have loved God, but that he loved us.” Advent love is grounded in grace, not performance. God acts first. He gives first. He moves toward us while we are still learning how to respond.
As Christmas draws near, this truth steadies us. The heart of the season is not what we prepare, host, or accomplish, but what God has already done. Christ was sent so that we might live—fully, freely, and restored. God’s love meets us in our need, bears the weight of sin, and opens the way to new life. On this holy night, love stands before us not as demand, but as gift.

Closing Prayer
God of love, thank You for making Your love known through the sending of Your Son. On this holy night, quiet my heart and help me receive the gift You have already given. Let Your love shape my worship, my gratitude, and my trust. Amen.
