“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Samuel was sent to anoint the next king of Israel. Standing before Jesse’s sons, he was drawn to the tall and impressive ones. But God reminded him that His standard is not the same as ours: He looks past the surface to the heart.
Loss and disappointment can tempt us to measure trustworthiness by what we can see—success, strength, or control. But God’s goodness assures us that appearances are not the whole story. He sees what we cannot: the quiet motives, the hidden faith, the unseen surrender.
David, the overlooked shepherd boy, was chosen because his heart was aligned with God’s. Trust means believing that God sees more clearly than we do—both in others and in our own lives. When the surface looks unimpressive or the future uncertain, His vision penetrates deeper, and His choices are always good.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God’s vision is clear, and His choices are always good.

Exhale: “…and I trust Your ways.”
Practical Application
Pause today and reflect: Am I more focused on appearances than on cultivating a heart of trust and faithfulness? Ask God to shape your inner life more than your outward image.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that You see me fully—past appearances, past mistakes, into the deepest places of my heart. Shape me into someone who trusts You fully, and teach me to value what You value. Amen.
