Discipline with a Purpose
Scripture
“Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way.”—1 Timothy 4:7–8 ESV
Devotional
Spiritual disciplines create space for the Spirit to form the life of Christ within us. Prayer, Scripture, worship, fasting, and service train our attention toward Jesus and help us respond more readily to His voice and grace.
Paul points us toward godliness as the purpose of our training. Godliness is a life increasingly shaped by Christ—His love, holiness, humility, courage, and obedience becoming visible in us. The practices themselves remain servants of this greater aim: knowing Jesus and becoming like Him.
Training requires consistency because our hearts are continually being shaped by what receives our time and affection. As we offer our habits to Christ, He uses them to strengthen faith, reorder desire, and prepare us for faithful obedience in every part of life.
