Scripture Focus:
Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
“…who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
The Joy Set Before Him
As Lent draws us closer to the cross, we are invited to see not only what Jesus endured, but what sustained Him. Hebrews tells us that it was “for the joy set before him” that He endured the cross. The suffering was real, the shame was real, but so was the joy that lay beyond it. Jesus held both in view.
This joy was not found in the pain itself. It was found in what the pain would accomplish — the restoration of what was broken, the redemption of His people, and the glory of being reunited with the Father. The cross was not the end of the story. It was the pathway to resurrection.
This reshapes how we understand our own seasons of surrender and waiting. When we walk through difficulty, it can feel like we are moving through something that has no clear purpose. But Jesus shows us that God’s work often unfolds with a future we cannot yet see. What feels costly now may be part of a greater story of redemption.
James echoes this perspective when he writes, “Count it all joy… when you meet trials of various kinds” (James 1:2, ESV). This is not a call to ignore hardship, but to trust that God is producing something through it — something that will lead to maturity and wholeness.
Lent reminds us that the cross is not detached from joy.
It is the road that leads to it.
And the same God who carried Jesus through suffering is faithful to carry us as well.
Practice
Think of one area of your life that feels difficult or costly right now.
Bring it before God and pray:
“Lord, help me trust what You are producing, even if I cannot yet see the joy ahead.”
Reflection Question
Where might God be inviting me to trust that there is purpose beyond what feels difficult right now?
