Comforted by Christ

Scripture

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction.”—2 Corinthians 1:3–4 ESV

Devotional

Paul begins this letter by praising God in the middle of suffering. He does not speak about comfort as an abstract idea but as something he has personally received in affliction. God draws near to His people with mercy, and His comfort reaches us through Christ, who entered suffering Himself and now meets us there with compassion and presence.

Biblical comfort does more than make pain easier to endure. It strengthens us to remain faithful inside it. Paul had been brought beyond his own ability to cope so that he would learn to rely on “God who raises the dead.” Suffering exposed the limits of self-reliance and became a place where resurrection hope took deeper root.

The comfort we receive in Christ also becomes something we can carry to others. God often uses the places where He has sustained us to make us more attentive, compassionate, and present to someone else’s pain. His mercy does not stop with us; it moves through us as the life of Jesus becomes visible in the way we care for one another.

Reflection Question

Where do you need to receive the comfort of Christ instead of relying only on your own ability to endure?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You entered suffering and know what it is to carry sorrow. Meet me in the places where I feel weary, overwhelmed, or afraid. Teach me to rely on the God who raises the dead and to receive the comfort You freely give. Let the mercy You show me make me more compassionate toward others, so that Your presence becomes visible through the way I love. Amen.
