Revelation 22
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” — Revelation 22:20 (ESV)
Devotional
Revelation 22 brings the journey to its final horizon, and that horizon is not merely a place. It is Christ Himself. The chapter is filled with beauty—the river of the water of life, the tree of life, the healing of the nations, the curse removed, the face of God seen at last. But the deepest comfort of the passage is that the end of the story is full communion with the Lord. His servants will worship Him, belong to Him, and dwell in His light forever.
This is what makes the chapter so strengthening for the present. The Christian life is not sustained only by looking back to what Christ has done, though that is essential. It is also sustained by looking ahead to what He has promised. “Surely I am coming soon.” These are not sentimental words. They are the promise of the risen Christ to His people. The One who redeemed us will also return for us.
And that promise gives shape to the whole chapter. The river of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Life, healing, and joy all come from Him. The invitation is still open: “Let the one who is thirsty come.” Christ remains the source of life from beginning to end. He is not only the one who meets us at conversion. He is the one who sustains us through the journey and stands waiting at its end.
That is why the final prayer of Scripture is so fitting: “Come, Lord Jesus!” It is the cry of a people who have learned that their hope is not in earthbound stability, but in the return of their King. This longing does not make believers passive. It makes them faithful. The certainty of Christ’s coming strengthens endurance, deepens holiness, and keeps the heart awake with hope.
So Revelation 22 teaches us to live as people who are on the way to Someone. The journey ends in Christ. The thirst of the soul ends in Christ. The hope that carries us through every sorrow and delay ends in Christ. He is coming soon, and because He is, today can be lived with longing, confidence, and joy.
