Beholding the Glory of Christ

Scripture

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” —2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV

Devotional

Paul contrasts the old covenant written on stone with the new covenant accomplished through Christ and ministered by the Spirit. The law revealed the holiness of God, yet it could not give sinful hearts the life required to fulfill it. In Jesus, something greater has come. The veil is removed, the Spirit gives life, and we are brought near enough to behold the glory of God in the face of Christ.

This changes how we understand spiritual formation. Paul says we are transformed as we behold the Lord. The Christian life is shaped through sustained attention to Jesus—seeing His holiness, receiving His grace, listening to His words, remembering His cross, and fixing our hope on His resurrection. What captivates our attention eventually shapes our affections, and what shapes our affections begins to shape the way we live.

The transformation Paul describes is also deeply dependent on the Spirit. We cannot manufacture Christlikeness through determination. The Spirit takes what is true of Jesus and increasingly forms it within us, moving us “from one degree of glory to another.” Growth may be gradual, but it is real: pride gives way to humility, resentment to mercy, fear to trust, and self-protection to the self-giving love of Christ.

Our aim, then, is to keep turning toward Jesus. We behold Him in Scripture, encounter Him in prayer, receive His grace in repentance, and learn to recognize His character throughout the ordinary rhythms of life. As we remain before Him, the Spirit performs the work only He can do: making the people who belong to Christ increasingly resemble the Christ they love.

Reflection Question

What has been holding your attention lately, and how might turning your gaze more intentionally toward Christ shape who you are becoming?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, remove anything that keeps me from seeing You clearly. Fix my attention on Your beauty, holiness, mercy, and truth. Forgive me for giving my heart to things that form desires unlike Yours. Holy Spirit, do in me what I cannot accomplish for myself. As I behold Christ, transform my thoughts, loves, reactions, and desires until His character becomes increasingly visible in me. Keep turning my heart toward Jesus, from one degree of glory to another. Amen.
