As I Have Done for You

Scripture

“For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” — John 13:15, ESV

Devotional

Jesus kneels before His disciples with a towel around His waist and washes their feet. The One through whom all things were made takes the posture of a servant. He does not serve from weakness or insecurity. He serves from the settled knowledge of who He is, where He came from, and where He is going. His humility flows from His secure relationship with the Father and His unwavering love for His people.

Before Jesus tells the disciples to serve one another, He serves them. This order matters. Christian service does not begin with pressure to become more generous, patient, or humble. It begins with receiving the love of Christ. He comes near to cleanse those who cannot cleanse themselves. The foot washing points toward the greater act of love that awaits Him at the cross, where He will lay down His life to wash His people fully from sin.

Jesus then invites His disciples to reflect what they have received. “I have given you an example,” He says. He is not asking them to perform humility so they can prove their worth. He is teaching them to live from the grace that has already stooped down to meet them. We serve because Christ first served us. We bend low because our Savior came low. We offer ourselves in love because we belong to the One who gave Himself completely.

This kind of service often appears in ordinary places. It may look like listening without rushing, helping without being noticed, forgiving without keeping score, or caring for someone when it interrupts our plans. These acts become Christlike when they flow from communion with Him rather than the need for recognition. Jesus is still the One who serves His people, and by His Spirit He forms His humble love within us. We do not have to make ourselves small enough to be useful. We simply receive His love and allow that love to move through us toward others.
