Scripture Focus
When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, ‘What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?’" – 1 Samuel 10:9–11 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Saul had just been anointed by Samuel, an ordinary man sent on an errand to find his father’s donkeys. As he turned to leave, everything changed: “God gave him another heart.” The Spirit of God came upon him, and even those who had known Saul all his life were astonished—he was not the same man.
Yet notice this: Saul’s outward circumstances didn’t shift overnight. He returned home to his family and the responsibilities he had before. What changed was not the path beneath his feet but the heart within his chest.
We often assume that trusting God means He will change what’s around us—the circumstances, the problems, the things that weigh heavy. But sometimes His first work is quieter and deeper: He changes us. God gave Saul a new heart before his life looked any different.
For us too, His goodness meets us right where we are. He gives strength in the places we feel weak, hope where discouragement lingers, and faith where fear tries to take root. The landscape of life may not shift immediately, but our hearts are renewed to walk it differently—with Him.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God’s Spirit makes me new, giving strength for the path right in front of me.
Breath Prayer: Inhale: “Renew my heart…” Exhale: “…to walk with You today.”
Practical Application
Think about one area of your life that feels ordinary, repetitive, or even disappointing. Ask God to give you a new heart toward it—eyes to see His goodness there and strength to trust Him in the middle of it.
Journal Prompt
Where am I waiting for God to change my circumstances, when perhaps He is inviting me to let Him change my heart first?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a God who makes hearts new. Change me from the inside out, so I can trust You in the ordinary and reflect Your Spirit to those who know me best. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
God’s goodness doesn’t always remove us from familiar places—it renews our hearts so we can live differently within them.
