✨ Today’s Discipline | Simplicity
Living With an Undivided Heart
Simplicity is the practice of ordering our lives around wholehearted devotion to God. Our lives can become complicated not only because we have too many possessions or commitments, but because our hearts are being pulled in too many directions. We want to follow Christ, but we also want approval. We want to trust God, but we also want control. We want His kingdom, but we can still organize our lives around comfort, achievement, or security.
David prays in Psalm 86:11, “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name” (ESV). His prayer recognizes that the heart can become divided. Simplicity asks God to gather those competing desires and increasingly orient them toward one center: Himself. Rather than trying to manage dozens of competing priorities, we learn to ask, What does faithfulness to Christ require of me here?
Jesus describes this kind of clarity when He says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33, ESV). Seeking first does not mean neglecting work, relationships, responsibilities, or ordinary needs. Jesus is teaching us what orders everything else. When His kingdom comes first, the other parts of our lives can begin to find their proper place beneath it.
Simplicity therefore is not necessarily about doing less for the sake of doing less. Sometimes faithfulness will require a full season. The question is whether our lives are being directed by one central allegiance. The Spirit forms in us an increasingly undivided heart—one that can move through many responsibilities while remaining oriented toward Christ.
Guided Practice
Today, rather than immediately removing something from your life, examine what is ordering it.
Choose one area:
Your schedule
Your finances
Your relationships
Your work
Your entertainment
Your plans for the future
Ask yourself:
What am I primarily seeking here?
Be specific. Maybe it is faithfulness, but perhaps you also notice a desire for approval, comfort, control, recognition, or security.
Then ask:
“If seeking God’s kingdom came first in this area, what would change?”
You may discover something you need to release. You may need to say no to something. But you may also realize that the activity itself does not need to change—only the heart from which you are doing it.
Choose one small action today that reflects your primary allegiance to Christ.
Pray:
“Father, unite my heart to fear Your name. Gather the desires within me that compete for first place and teach me to seek Your kingdom above everything else. Give me wisdom to recognize what belongs in my life and courage to release what does not. By Your Spirit, form in me an undivided heart so that every part of my life is increasingly ordered toward You.”
Reflection Prompt
Where do I notice competing allegiances within my heart, and what would it look like for devotion to Christ to order that part of my life?
