Making Space for What Matters Most
Simplicity is the practice of intentionally removing what distracts us from wholehearted devotion to Christ. It is not primarily about owning fewer things or living with less, though it may include those choices. Simplicity is about creating room in our lives for deeper communion with God. It asks a simple question: What is helping me seek Christ, and what is competing for my attention?
When Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha, Martha was distracted by many responsibilities while Mary sat at His feet. Jesus responded in Luke 10:42 (ESV), “one thing is necessary.” Simplicity helps us recover that one thing. It trains us to distinguish between what is essential and what is merely urgent.
This discipline forms contentment and trust. We often fill our lives with noise, commitments, possessions, and distractions because we believe they will provide security, significance, or satisfaction. Yet Christ alone is sufficient. Simplicity gently loosens our grip on lesser things so that our hearts can be more fully anchored in Him. It is not about deprivation; it is about freedom.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one area of your life to simplify.
Consider:
Your schedule
Your physical space
Your digital habits
Your commitments
Your mental and emotional clutter
Ask yourself:
What is consuming attention that belongs to Christ?
What could I release, postpone, remove, or simplify today?
Take one practical step:
Clear a space
Turn off notifications
Say no to something unnecessary
Create margin in your schedule
Spend time with Christ instead of reaching for distraction
Pray:
“Jesus, teach me to seek first Your kingdom. Help me release what crowds my heart so that I can make more room for You.”
Reflection Prompt
What did simplifying reveal about the things competing for my attention, and how might Christ be inviting me into greater freedom and contentment?
