Stewarding What God Has Entrusted to You

Service is the practice of using what God has entrusted to us for the good of others and the glory of His name. We often think of service as something additional to our ordinary responsibilities—volunteering, participating in ministry, or setting aside time to help someone. While these are meaningful expressions of service, Scripture invites us to see something broader. Our abilities, experiences, resources, relationships, and opportunities are all gifts that can become instruments of God's love.

Peter writes, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10, ESV). Notice that Peter connects service with stewardship. We are not the ultimate owners of what we possess; we are caretakers of what God has generously supplied. Our gifts were never intended merely for personal advancement or recognition. They have been entrusted to us so that, through them, others might experience the goodness and grace of God.

This changes the way we think about what we have to offer. We may overlook our ordinary abilities because they do not seem particularly impressive. But hospitality, organization, encouragement, teaching, generosity, administration, creativity, and practical care can all become expressions of Christlike service. God does not ask us to offer what we have not been given. He calls us to faithfully steward what is already in our hands.

Jesus is both our example and the source of our service. He came “not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45, ESV), ultimately giving His life as a ransom for many. His service secured our salvation, and His Spirit now enables us to love others with the grace we have received. We do not serve to earn a place in God's family. We serve because, through Christ, we already belong to Him. Our ordinary gifts become opportunities to participate in His loving care for others.

Guided Practice

Today, consider what God has already placed in your hands.

Rather than beginning by looking for another commitment, ask:

What have I been given that could serve someone else?

Consider these areas:

  • Your abilities: Is there something you do well that could make another person's life easier?

  • Your time: Is there someone who would benefit from your presence or attention?

  • Your resources: Could you meet a practical need with something you already have?

  • Your experience: Is there wisdom or encouragement you could offer someone facing a situation you have walked through?

  • Your relationships: Is there someone you could connect, encourage, or support?

Choose one gift and put it to use today.

It does not need to become a new project or an ongoing responsibility. Look for a faithful opportunity within the life God has already entrusted to you.

As you serve, remember that the aim is not to demonstrate how gifted or generous you are. It is to make the grace of God visible through what He has given.

Pray:

"Father, thank You for the gifts, abilities, relationships, and resources You have entrusted to me. Forgive me for the ways I have overlooked them or treated them as though they exist only for my benefit. Give me wisdom to steward what I have received and eyes to recognize where it can serve others. By Your Spirit, make me generous, attentive, and faithful, so that through my ordinary acts of service, others might encounter the love of Christ."

Reflection Prompt

What has God already entrusted to me that I may be overlooking as an opportunity to serve others, and how can I use it more faithfully for His glory?
