Joining Christ in His Work of Love

Service is the practice of participating in the love of Christ through humble, tangible acts of care for others. Jesus did not merely command service—He embodied it. In Mark 10:45 (ESV), He says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Service begins by looking at Christ and allowing His life to shape ours.

Because Christ has served us so completely, we are free to serve without needing recognition, repayment, or approval. We do not serve to earn God’s love; we serve because we have received it. The gospel frees us from self-preoccupation and opens our eyes to the needs of others. Service becomes one of the practical ways Christ’s love is expressed through His people.

Service also forms attentiveness. It teaches us to notice what we might otherwise overlook—the lonely person, the practical need, the opportunity to encourage, the chance to carry a burden with someone else. As we practice service, we grow in humility, compassion, and generosity. The ordinary acts of love that often go unseen become sacred because they reflect the heart of Christ.

Guided Practice

Today, ask Christ to help you notice an opportunity to serve.

Begin your day with this prayer:

“Jesus, help me see people the way You see them and love them the way You love them.”

Then choose one intentional act of service:

• Encourage someone with specific and sincere words

• Offer practical help without being asked

• Listen attentively without rushing to speak

• Meet a need quietly and anonymously if possible

• Use your time, resources, or abilities to bless someone else

Serve without drawing attention to yourself. Let the act be an offering to Christ.
