The God Who Sees You

Scripture Focus

“So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, ‘You are a God of seeing,’ for she said, ‘Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.’”

— Genesis 16:13 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

Hagar is far from where she ever expected to be. She is displaced, unseen by those who hold power over her, and sent away into the wilderness with little more than uncertainty ahead. Yet it is here—on the margins, in the quiet ache of being overlooked—that God meets her.

Scripture tells us that the Lord found Hagar by a spring in the wilderness. He does not wait for her to find her way back or fix her circumstances. He goes to her. And when He speaks, He calls her by name. Not “servant.” Not “runaway.” Hagar.

This is the pattern of God’s calling. He sees before He sends. He names before He instructs. His attention is not reserved for those who feel secure, confident, or clearly placed. It reaches into wilderness places, into seasons where identity feels fragile and direction unclear.

Hagar responds by naming God in return: El Roi—the God who sees me. This is not a theological abstraction. It is a confession born of encounter. The God who sees does not merely observe from a distance; He looks after. He attends. He remains present.

There are seasons when calling feels muted because we feel unseen. When our lives feel small, hidden, or misaligned with expectation. But Scripture reminds us that being seen by God is not contingent on being centered, celebrated, or certain. It is grounded in His character.

Today, you are not overlooked. You are not lost in the margins. The God who calls you also sees you—fully, personally, and tenderly.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

Breath Prayer:

Inhale: You see me, God.

Exhale: I am not alone.

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

Slow your breathing and allow your shoulders to relax. With each inhale, receive the truth of God’s attentive presence. With each exhale, release the fear of being unseen. Remain here for several minutes.

Practical Application

Pay attention today to moments where you feel unnoticed or insignificant. Instead of rushing past them, quietly acknowledge God’s presence there. Let those moments become reminders that you are seen, even when no one else is watching.

Journal Prompt

Where in my life do I feel unseen right now, and what might it look like to trust that God is already there with me?

Closing Prayer

God who sees me, thank You for finding me in places I did not choose. Help me trust Your presence when I feel overlooked and uncertain. Teach me to live today grounded in the assurance that I am fully seen by You. Amen.

Invitation

As you train for godliness, remember this: being seen by God is enough to steady your steps. Run with aim today, trusting that the God who sees you will guide you faithfully forward.
