“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” — Isaiah 43:1 (ESV)
Devotional
Isaiah 43 speaks with astonishing tenderness. The Lord addresses His people not first by what they have done, but by what He has done for them. “I have redeemed you.” He does not begin with demand, but with belonging. He has called them by name, and they are His. Before the chapter says anything about waters, fire, or wilderness, it establishes this unshakable truth: the people of God are known and claimed by Him.
That truth becomes especially precious because the passage does not promise an easy path. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through fire you shall not be burned.” The promise is not that hardship will never come, but that it will not have the final word. God’s presence accompanies His people through what would otherwise overwhelm them. The same Lord who redeems also keeps.
And the ground of that promise is His love. “You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” These are not sentimental words detached from covenant faithfulness. They are the words of the Holy One of Israel, the God whose love is steadfast, sovereign, and active. He gathers, rescues, and restores because His heart is set upon His people.
This finds its fullness in Christ. Jesus is the Redeemer through whom God’s claim upon His people is secured forever. In Him, we are not only rescued from exile but from sin itself. He passes through the waters of judgment for us and bears the fire of wrath in our place so that we might belong to God without fear. And because we are united to Christ, the promise stands: we are His, and He is with us.
So Isaiah 43 teaches us to interpret difficulty through belonging. Fear loosens its grip when the heart remembers whose it is. The deepest comfort is not that we can master what lies ahead, but that the One who calls us by name goes with us. The waters may rise and the fire may burn, but neither can undo the word Christ has secured over His people: you are mine.
Reflection Prompt
Where do I need to remember today that I belong to Christ and am held by His presence, especially in the places that feel uncertain or overwhelming?
“You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” I NEEDED THAT. I’ll be the first to say I do not wake up feeling this way. This statement is true rather I feel it or not and rather my circumstances confirm it or not. I have so many moving parts and unknown and what feels like a lot of no’s as answers to prayers, but these words remind me that Jesus loves me deeply and is just as concerned with my good as he is with his glory 💛
