✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting

Learning to Desire Christ Above Every Other Appetite

Fasting is the practice of voluntarily setting something aside in order to create greater space for God. It is not primarily about what we give up, but about what we pursue. Fasting reveals that our deepest need is not ultimately food, comfort, entertainment, or distraction—it is Christ Himself. In John 6:35 (ESV), Jesus declares, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Throughout Scripture, fasting is connected to prayer, repentance, dependence, and seeking God. It is a tangible reminder that we are sustained by more than physical provision. When Jesus fasted in the wilderness, He responded to temptation by saying in Matthew 4:4 (ESV), “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Fasting trains our hearts to believe that truth.

This discipline also reveals what we often turn to for comfort or control. The absence of something familiar can expose hidden dependencies and disordered desires. Yet this is not a cause for shame. It is an invitation to bring those desires to Christ, who alone can truly satisfy the soul. Fasting forms us by redirecting our hunger toward Him.

Guided Practice

Today, choose one thing to intentionally fast from.

You might:

  • Skip a meal and use that time for prayer

  • Fast from social media or entertainment

  • Set aside a comfort or habit that regularly occupies your attention

When you notice the absence of what you've set aside:

  • Pause and turn your attention toward Christ

  • Offer a brief prayer of dependence

  • Read a short passage of Scripture

  • Ask God to deepen your desire for Him

Rather than immediately filling the space, allow the hunger or longing to become a reminder of your need for Christ.

Pray:

"Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Teach me to seek my satisfaction in You above every other source of comfort, pleasure, or security."

Reflection Prompt

What did my fasting reveal about the things I depend on most, and how did it invite me to depend more fully on Christ?
