Rejoicing in the Goodness of God
Celebration is the practice of intentionally delighting in God and rejoicing in His faithfulness. While many spiritual disciplines train us through restraint, celebration trains us through gratitude. It teaches us to recognize God’s goodness, receive His gifts with thanksgiving, and respond with joy. In Psalms 118:24 (ESV), the psalmist declares, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Celebration is choosing to agree with that invitation.
Throughout Scripture, God’s people regularly celebrated His works. They remembered His deliverance, provision, covenant faithfulness, and presence. Celebration kept them from forgetting who God was and what He had done. In Christ, we have even greater reason to rejoice. Through His death and resurrection, we have been forgiven, reconciled to God, adopted as His children, and given a living hope that cannot be taken away.
Celebration forms joy by teaching us to notice grace. Left to ourselves, we often fixate on what is lacking, unfinished, or uncertain. Celebration redirects our attention to God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that even in difficult seasons, Christ remains worthy of praise. Joy becomes not the denial of hardship, but the recognition that God’s goodness is greater still.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally celebrate God’s goodness.
Spend time worshiping Christ through song, prayer, or Scripture
Reflect on the past week and write down three specific evidences of God’s faithfulness
Share gratitude with someone who has encouraged or blessed you
Enjoy one of God’s gifts with intentional thanksgiving—a meal, nature, fellowship, creativity, or rest
Tell God specifically what you are thankful for and why
Pray:
“Jesus, thank You for Your faithfulness. Open my eyes to see Your goodness more clearly and fill my heart with joy in Your presence.”
