Scripture Focus
“Two things I ask of You;
deny them not to me before I die:
remove far from me falsehood and lying;
give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with the food that is needful for me,
lest I be full and deny You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ or lest I be poor and steal
and profane the name of my God.”
— Proverbs 30:7–9 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
There is a rare humility in the prayer of Agur — the willingness to ask God not for abundance or scarcity, but simply for enough. In a world shaped by excess, this prayer sounds almost foreign. Yet it is deeply aligned with the heart of contentment.
To ask for “what is needful” is to trust that God knows our limits and our longings. It is to admit that too much can lead us to independence, and too little can tempt us toward desperation. The wise heart recognizes that contentment thrives in the sacred middle: the daily bread, the steady provision, the life held by God and not determined by our accumulation.
“Enough” is not a small blessing — it is a spacious one. It frees us from striving and invites us into simplicity. It teaches us to recognize God’s hand in the ordinary provisions that quietly sustain us.
Contentment matures when we stop asking God to give us more and begin asking Him to make us faithful with what He has already placed in our hands.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Give me what is needful.
Exhale: Teach me to be content.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Let your breathing slow. As you inhale, welcome God’s wisdom into your desires. As you exhale, release the craving for what will not satisfy. Let this rhythm steady you into a posture of trust.
Practical Application
Name your enough. Identify one area where God has already given you what you need — and thank Him for it.
Fast from comparison today — on social media, in conversations, in quiet thoughts.
Practice simple gratitude: before each meal, thank God specifically for the “food that is needful” for you today.
Journal Prompt
What does “enough” look like in your life right now? Where is God inviting you to embrace simplicity and trust His provision?
Closing Prayer
Lord, teach me the wisdom of enough. Free me from the desire for more than You intend and from the fear of having less. Give me a heart that delights in Your provision, trusts Your timing, and rests in Your sufficiency. Amen.
