Carried by God

Scripture

Isaiah 46

“Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” — Isaiah 46:4 (ESV)

Devotional

Isaiah 46 gives one of the most tender pictures of God’s strength in all of Scripture. The chapter contrasts lifeless idols that must be carried by people with the living God who carries His people. False gods are burdens. The Lord is a bearer of burdens. That contrast is everything.

We are often tempted to look for strength in things that cannot sustain us. We reach for control, performance, approval, certainty, or visible outcomes, hoping they will hold us up through the journey. But like idols in Isaiah 46, those things cannot carry us. They only add weight. They ask more from us than they can ever give back.

Then God speaks with astonishing mercy: “I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” The Lord does not merely command His people forward. He promises His sustaining presence all along the way. The God who formed them is the God who will not abandon them midway. His strength is not occasional. It is covenantal. He carries what belongs to Him.

This comes into even clearer focus in Christ. Jesus does not stand at a distance and tell weary people to find their footing. He comes near. He bears our sin, carries our grief, and remains faithful to hold His people all the way home. In Him, strength for the journey is not the power to keep yourself afloat. It is the grace of being upheld by the One who will never let you go.

So Isaiah 46 reminds us that the journey is not sustained by our ability to carry everything well. It is sustained by the God who carries us. That is the comfort of the passage. You are not asked to become unbreakable. You are invited to trust the One whose strength does not fail.

Reflection Prompt

Where am I feeling the weight of trying to carry myself right now, and how is Christ inviting me to rest in the strength of the God who carries me?
